HPS means high-pressure sodium. The bulb produces light, the ballast controls its electrical supply and the reflector distributes light over your plants. A complete HPS fixture brings these parts together. Check exactly which components are included before ordering.
For a new installation, start with the growing area, available height and heat removal. For a replacement, start with the exact fixture and ballast model. Matching wattage alone is insufficient: lamp technology, base and electrical version must also agree.
A replacement bulb and a new complete fixture solve different needs. Record which components you intend to keep, then assess the lighting as a complete system.
A bulb’s wattage identifies its power class. It does not guarantee a fixed growing area. Reflector shape, hanging height, plant requirements and light distribution determine whether a setup suits your space. Assess edges and corners as well as the centre.
A higher-powered lamp places greater demands on clearance and heat removal. Dimming may provide flexibility within the settings allowed for the exact combination. Extra power will not correct an unsuitable reflector or uneven distribution.
Check rated lamp power, base and designations such as SE, DE and EL. E40 is a screw base; a double-ended lamp has contacts at both ends. Physical fit does not prove electrical compatibility. A 400V lamp designation is also distinct from the ballast’s mains input voltage.
Individual ballasts and reflectors allow targeted component replacement. Do not combine HPS bulbs with MH or CMH equipment simply because a connection fits. Each technology requires a compatible version.
Calculate energy use from the actual input power of the complete setup: watts ÷ 1000 × operating hours = kWh. A setup drawing 650W uses 7.8 kWh over twelve hours. This is a calculation example, not a fixed consumption figure for a 600W HPS bulb.
Include ballast losses and the selected dimming level. Ventilation and other equipment consume additional energy. Check conditions at plant level and allow clearance for hanging hardware and heat removal. The correct lamp distance depends on the fixture and growing conditions.
