Which LED grow light fits your space?
A well-matched LED grow light illuminates the whole growing area evenly, including the edges. Start with the length and width of your space and the clearance above your plants. Fixture dimensions determine whether it physically fits; light distribution determines the area it can illuminate effectively.
A compact panel is practical where space and height are limited. A bar fixture spreads its light sources across a larger footprint. Power, fixture shape, hanging height and dimming level work together to determine the light reaching your plants. Assess PPFD across the whole area, including the corners.
Match intensity to your crop and growth stage. Dimmable lighting lets you adjust output without rebuilding your setup. Plan hanging hardware, ventilation and controls alongside the fixture.

Balancing light output and power use
More watts do not automatically mean better lighting. PPF in µmol/s describes photon output from the fixture. PPFD in µmol/m²/s describes the light reaching the growing area. Efficacy in µmol/J describes how effectively a fixture turns electrical input into light within the measured wavelength range.
A useful comparison uses the same measurement area, hanging height and wavelength range. A high centre reading says little about the corners. Total output including NIR also differs from PAR over 400–700 nm. Consider distribution and electricity use together.
Build an LED setup that can grow with your space
Fixture size and clearance are decisive in a compact space. For larger or rectangular areas, consider the overlap between multiple fixtures. Careful positioning helps avoid an intensely lit centre surrounded by dark edges.
Distinguish main lighting from supplemental lighting beneath or beside the crop. Match dimmers, controllers and cables to the electrical connections and control protocol. A matching plug alone is insufficient. When expanding, make sure hanging hardware, electrical supply and climate control suit the total power.
For larger growing areas, assess several fixtures together. Compare PPFD maps at the same mounting height and dimming level, and check the overlap between illuminated areas.
