Rockwool growing media

Choose rockwool for the stage of your grow: small plugs for propagation, a larger block for a rooted plug, or a loose medium for pots. Our range includes Grodan, Cultilene and Agra-Wool. Check block dimensions, hole size and the unit sold before choosing your pack.

Which form of rockwool do you need?

Start with the task. A plug tray holds small propagation plugs together. A starter block gives a rooted plug the next root space. Mapito and RFX-1 are loose mixes for filling pots or containers. Compare these forms by their purpose; a bigger pack does not make them interchangeable.

From a small plug to a larger root block

Grodan SBS 25/150 consists of square stone wool plugs in a tray. Each SBS 25/150 plug measures 25 × 25 × 40 mm, with 150 plugs per tray. Cultilene plugs are also sold in trays of 150. Round plugs are offered with 104 per tray and eight trays per box. Check the shape and size of the receiving cell as well.

For a rooted plug, choose a starter block. The Grodan block measures 7.5 × 7.5 × 6.5 cm and has a 38 mm hole. Agra-Wool offers the same outer dimensions with a 28 or 38 mm hole, individually or in boxes of 224. The Agra-Wool version is a basalt fibre block. Measure both the plug and the opening: matching outer dimensions do not guarantee a matching fit.

Prepare rockwool and manage watering

Wet plugs and blocks evenly before use with a solution suited to the product, crop and growing stage. Allow excess water to drain. Do not squeeze the fibre structure. A fixed soaking time or one pH and EC setting for every brand is not a sound starting point.

Base subsequent watering on moisture condition and root development. Check several plugs or blocks, especially around tray edges. A wet surface does not tell you the condition of the whole block. Avoid leaving the medium standing in stagnant water.

Loose media: Mapito or RFX-1

Cultilene Mapito is offered in an 80 litre bag. Agra-Wool RFX-1 comes in a box containing three 80 litre bags, totalling 240 litres. RFX-1 combines Earthwool cubes with foam flakes. Shake the bags loose before filling and do not compress this medium. Follow the wetting instructions for each mix.

Choose the right pack quantity

Work out the number of plant positions or the pot volume you actually need. Count plugs by tray, starter blocks by piece or box, and loose mixes by litre. A bag of 1,300 cubes measuring 4 × 4 × 4 cm is a different purchase from a larger block with a plant hole. Check the unit sold and total quantity before ordering.
