Start with the shape and quantity you need. The round version comes in a box of 8 trays with 104 plugs each: 832 plugs in total. Cultilene contains 150 plugs per tray. Grodan SBS 25/150 is a square stone wool plug supplied in a tray. Check plug dimensions against the planting hole in your next growing medium before choosing a combination.
Looking for square plugs? Choose Grodan SBS 25/150. This plug measures 25 × 25 × 40 mm. For a tray containing 150 stone wool plugs, browse Cultilene stone wool plugs, 150 per tray.
Match your order to the sales unit and the number of plants you want to start. The number of plugs does not tell you the tray’s outer dimensions. Check those dimensions before choosing a catch tray or propagator.
The round stone wool plugs come with 104 plugs per tray and 8 trays per box. That gives you 832 plugs. Choose this format when you need round plugs and a larger batch.
A round or square planting hole needs a suitable plug. Compare shape, diameter or width, and height with the hole. Browse stone wool starter blocks or other plant pots for the next growing stage.
Before use, wet the plugs evenly with a nutrient solution suited to your plant and growing stage. Stone wool does not contain a complete plant feed. Allow excess solution to drain and check that plugs in the middle of the tray have also absorbed enough moisture.
Monitor moisture and tray weight as the plants develop. Water according to the condition of the plugs and plants rather than giving a fixed daily dose. Avoid leaving standing water beneath the plugs for long periods. Check the edge plugs too: they may dry differently from those in the centre.

Measure the pH and EC of your prepared nutrient solution and follow the feeding schedule for your plant and propagation stage. Use a pH meter and EC meter. Our guide to measuring pH and EC explains what these readings tell you.
Move the plug when root development and the plant’s condition indicate it is ready for the next stage. Support the plug during transfer and avoid compressing the roots. For propagation in soil with a growing medium you choose yourself, you can also fill peat pots.
Using drip irrigation in the next growing stage? Measure the actual flow and check moisture distribution. The article below helps you calculate and check watering; it does not prescribe one fixed watering dose for every propagation plug.

Calculate a starting run time and measure each outlet. Practical examples for CNL valves, four-way distributors and capillary tubing.
