Choosing grow soil: start with pre-fertilisation

Want to build up your own feeding programme? Start with a lightmix. Kilomix offers a more heavily fertilised base. Bi Grow Mix sits between them and combines peat with coco. Browse Atami potting soil or Plagron potting soil if you already have a brand in mind.

Which potting mix suits your approach?

Lightly fertilised: manage feeding yourself. Plagron Lightmix with perlite and Atami Janeco Lightmix are peat-based media with perlite and a light starter fertiliser. They leave room to adjust additional nutrients to your plants. Existing fertiliser content is a key consideration for young plants.

Moderately fertilised: peat with coco. Atami Bi Grow Mix combines peat with coco fibres and chips. Its fertilisation level falls between Janeco Lightmix and Kilomix. Choose it for that blend of base materials; it is not a pure coco substrate.

Heavily fertilised: a richer starting mix. Atami Kilomix contains peat and perlite, enriched with ingredients including worm castings, lime and guano. Account for those nutrients in your feeding plan instead of automatically adding a full fertiliser dose from the first watering.

When to start feeding

Pre-fertilisation means nutrients are already present in the mix. With Plagron Lightmix, start mineral base nutrients after the first week. An organic feeding programme may require a different starting point. With Atami, match additional feeding to the mix, plant and chosen feeding schedule.

A starter feeding period is not a fixed guarantee: pot size, plant size and conditions affect demand. Choose Plagron plant nutrients or Atami B’cuzz plant nutrients and account for the fertiliser already in your soil when setting the dose.

How much potting soil do you need?

Add up the volume you will actually fill. For example, four empty pots each filled with 11 litres require 44 litres of mix. When repotting, subtract the space occupied by existing root balls. A 50 litre bag describes substrate volume, not weight or a fixed number of plants.

Choose plant pots with a suitable capacity, loosen the mix and avoid compressing it unnecessarily. Let excess water drain and check moisture before watering again. Add soil improvers only for a clear purpose.
