Start with hose size and your water supply

Replacing a hose? Check the existing connection size first. Choose a 25 metre coil of 12.5 mm garden hose or yellow 25 mm hose, sold by the metre or as a 25 metre coil. Measure the actual route and allow room for bends and movement. This helps you choose a useful length without unnecessary loops.

For a new irrigation run, choose the diameter for the required flow, run length and available pressure. A larger hose can reduce pressure loss at the same flow, but does not automatically solve low pressure at the source. Match the pump, fittings and outlets as a complete system.

Hose size and thread size describe different connections. A hose with a 25 mm internal diameter does not mean that the outside of a 1-inch thread measures 25 mm. Record both sizes separately.

Claw coupling, hose tail or push-fit connector?

A brass claw coupling joins suitable claw connections with a turning action. A threaded version connects to a tap or component with a matching thread. A hose tail provides the hose connection; match the tail and securing method to the internal diameter and construction of the hose.

Our brass claw couplings come with ¾-, 1-, 1¼- and 1½-inch male or female threads. Hose tails are available in ½, ¾ and 1 inch. Plastic push-fit connectors have ½-, ¾- or 1-inch female threads. Check the coupling profile too: a plastic push-fit connector does not automatically fit a brass claw coupling.

Check every joint before watering

Check hoses, seals and threads for dirt or damage. Assemble each component using its intended seal and securing method. A hose tail needs suitable hose retention; the sealing method on a threaded fitting depends on its design. Tightening harder does not solve a size mismatch.

Open the water supply gradually and check every joint for leaks while in use. The brass non-return valve in this range has two 1-inch female-threaded ports; also check flow direction for your application. Use a verified matching connection for a watering wand and keep the hose free of kinks.
