EC meters

An EC meter measures electrical conductivity to help you track dissolved salts in nutrient water. Choose a pen or measuring wand for your reservoir, or a substrate meter for the root zone. We help you compare measurement methods, range and maintenance with meters from Bluelab, Milwaukee, Hanna and Aqua Master Tools.

Nutrient solution or substrate: choose the measurement method

Checking your nutrient reservoir? Choose a meter for liquids. The Milwaukee C66 is a compact conductivity pen. The Bluelab EC Pen also displays temperature. The Bluelab Truncheon shows conductivity with LEDs along its measuring wand.

Measuring directly in the root zone? The Hanna HI98331 uses a penetration probe for soil. The Aqua Master Tools E300 Pro measures EC and temperature with a separate probe in soft, moist substrate. The Bluelab Pulse combines EC, moisture content and temperature with readings in the Pulse app.

Direct substrate readings, runoff measurements and freshly mixed nutrient solution each tell you something different. Compare results using the same method under similar conditions. Need pH as well? Explore our pH and EC meters.

Take useful nutrient water readings

Measure your source water first. Add nutrients using the appropriate feeding schedule, mix thoroughly and measure again once the reading settles. Record EC, water temperature and the mixing ratio so you can compare successive batches.

EC responds to dissolved salts. It cannot tell you the amount of nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium individually, or give a complete picture of organic nutrients. Use it alongside your feeding schedule and plant condition. Read why measuring both pH and EC matters.

Clean, check and calibrate correctly

Nutrient residue on the sensor can affect readings. Rinse the probe after use and clean it with materials suitable for the model. Allow the probe and liquid temperature to settle and wait for a stable reading, even with automatic temperature compensation.

The Truncheon is factory calibrated: you do not calibrate it yourself, but check its clean sensor with 2.77 EC standard solution. The C66, HI98331 and E300 Pro have their own calibration procedures. Select EC calibration solution with the correct reference value for your meter; pH buffer cannot replace it.
