A separate reflector or a replacement part?
Start with the equipment you already have. A separate lamp setup needs a reflector with a suitable lamp holder and connection. A replacement reflector is a component of an existing fixture. These are different types of purchase.
The mirror shade and dimpled shade are straightforward open designs. The Megalux versions also have reflecting sections along the sides. Want to adjust the shape? Explore the Adjust-a-Wing Medium with lamp holder and spreader and the Large version. The separate Wing-kap Medium is a different model; check the parts supplied with each option.
For an existing DimLux fixture, choose between the Alpha Optics 98 replacement for 315W and 600W and the 1000W replacement reflector using the exact fixture model. The 315W version belongs to CMH lighting; it does not refer to a 315W HPS bulb. Check the model and mounting before ordering.
Dimpled or mirror: consider the complete design
A dimpled reflector has a textured surface; a mirror reflector has a smooth reflective finish. The resulting light distribution also depends on the shape, lamp position and hanging height. A reflectivity percentage alone is not enough to choose a shade. Compare its size and mounting with your setup and assess how the light reaches the plants.
The separate Hamerslagkap is intended for 400W and 600W single-ended bulbs. Do not assume the same suitability for other shades or for double-ended lamps.
Adjustable wings: shape and available space
Adjust-a-Wing lets you adjust the curvature of the reflector and the position of the lamp holder. This gives you options for shaping the light distribution. The Medium and Large versions come with a lamp holder and spreader. Check the suitable bulb, ballast and wiring as well.
A larger shade is not automatically a better choice. Allow for the available width, hanging points and clearance around the lamp. Assess the light across the whole growing area, including its edges.
DimLux parts: replace or extend
Replace a damaged or worn shade with the part intended for your fixture. The DimLux Alpha Optics short-side add-on reflectors extend an existing reflector instead. They do not replace the main shade. Check which side and version your installation needs.
Switch off the installation, disconnect the power and let the bulb and fixture cool before working on them. Remove dust and residue using a method suited to the reflector coating. Use a clean, soft cloth and avoid abrasive cleaning. Scratches and permanent damage cannot be fixed by scrubbing harder. Read our guide to replacing HPS bulbs and maintaining your lighting too.
