Choosing a climate controller: start with your fan

A climate controller must suit your fan motor, connections and electrical load. We explain when to choose manual speed adjustment, temperature control or frequency control.

Write down what you want to control

Record the full fan model, motor type, supply voltage and current draw. Decide how many fans you will connect and whether intake and extraction need separate control. Then compare grow room climate controllers. Tent volume or an extractor’s airflow figure alone cannot identify a suitable controller.

A controller operates connected equipment. It does not cool or dehumidify the room by itself. Ventilation capacity and incoming air conditions still matter when temperature control is working correctly.

Manual speed or automatic temperature control?

A manual controller suits a setup where you choose fan speed yourself. The Cli-mate five-speed series has five steps and comes in 5A, 7A, 11A and 13A versions. That serves a different purpose from responding automatically to a temperature probe.

For a response to temperature, look for a suitable temperature controller. The Cli-mate KC series offers 7A, 12A and 16A versions; MC Multi Controllers offer 7+7A, 12+12A and 16+16A. With a dual rating, check how the permitted load is divided between outputs. Do not assume the combined figure applies freely to one socket.

When should you consider frequency control?

Cli-mate FC frequency controllers use another control method and come in 3A, 7A and 15A versions. Check that your exact motor is approved for this method. An EC fan with its own control input also needs a suitable controller and signal. Matching mains plugs or brand names do not confirm compatibility.

Compare current rating separately from function

The SMSCOM SPC 8A MK2 and SPC 16A MK2 respond to temperature with adjustable minimum and maximum speeds. Match the current class to the connected load. A 16A rating does not indicate higher airflow or make every fan suitable.

Include all connected fans and their starting requirements. Check limits per output and for the complete installation. On combined lighting and climate controllers, assess lighting sockets separately from fan connections. A lighting rating in watts does not replace a motor current check.

Check these points before buying

  1. Confirm the motor and supported control method.

  2. Check supply voltage, plugs, control signals and sensors.

  3. Add up the load and check all applicable limits.

  4. Decide whether you need a fixed speed, temperature response or extra functions.

  5. Check what is included with the exact version.

Temperature control does not automatically provide humidity control. Responding to relative humidity requires the appropriate sensor and function. Continue with our climate controller settings checklist. If you are unsure, we can help using your exact model numbers.
