Box fans: fixed or suspended motor?

Choose motor mounting separately from housing material. MDF and metal box fans can have a fixed or suspended motor. Compare vibration, installation and control to find the right version for your air path.

Two Torin MDF box fans with fixed and suspended motors

Motor mounting and housing are separate choices

When choosing an acoustic box fan, you will see terms such as MDF, metal housing, fixed motor and softbox. MDF and metal describe the housing. Fixed or suspended describes how the motor and fan are mounted inside it. A wooden box can use either mounting arrangement.

A box fan moves air through a fan inside a housing. The housing does not make it a carbon filter. If you need odour filtration, choose the filter separately as part of the air path.

What does a fixed motor do?

A fixed motor is attached to the box structure. The Torin MDF 1500 with fixed motor is one example. The box needs adequate support, and duct connections should not carry the weight of long duct runs. Allow enough room for fitting and maintenance.

Fixed mounting does not describe the control technology. It is a mechanical feature. You cannot infer dimmer compatibility, power consumption or a noise figure from it.

What does a suspended motor do?

In a softbox or suspended version, the motor and fan are suspended inside the housing. This mechanically isolates them from the box and reduces vibration transfer. The Torin MDF 1500 with suspended motor sits in the same model class as the fixed MDF 1500.

Isolation does not remove every source of noise. Air passing through restrictions, bends and outlets can still be audible. A suspended motor therefore does not promise a silent installation. Compare dB figures only when measurement distance, operating setting and installation conditions match.

Make a fair comparison

Start with models that have the same stated capacity. Then compare material, motor mounting, size, connections and included parts. Our range also includes a metal 1500 with fixed motor and a metal 1500 with suspended motor, letting you compare mounting within one housing material.

The number in a model name is not guaranteed airflow in every duct system. The fan works against the resistance of the complete installation. A performance curve for the exact model lets you assess airflow together with pressure. Without it, a fixed airflow under load cannot be established.

Assess the complete air path

Select a suitable carbon filter and check its working capacity and connection. Plan ventilation ducting and flanges next. Keep the route short, support the ducts and avoid unnecessary tight bends. Check both inlet and outlet; do not assume their connection sizes are identical.

A larger box does not automatically compensate for a poor air path. First identify the resistance and the airflow you actually need. A fixed floor-area rule does not account for heat, moisture and ducting.

Check electrical control separately

Choose a climate controller once you know the motor technology, permitted control method, maximum current and connection. Use the exact model's data and rating plate. Specifications for another Torin motor or a foam box cannot simply be transferred.

Before you order

  1. Required airflow and air-path resistance.

  2. Exact model and fixed or suspended motor.

  3. MDF or metal housing, available space and support.

  4. Inlet, outlet, filter, duct and suitable fittings.

  5. Permitted control method, current and electrical connection.

  6. Access for fitting and maintenance.
